Coaches Corner – September 2024

September 16, 2024

Hey team,

While for many swimmers the last month has been quiet, we have had 2 national competitions with 2 fantastic sets of results for LVW Aquatics.

The first meet was NZ SC Championships where the team achieved their highest ever national age group ranking and for the first time LVW Aquatics finished as top Bay of Plenty age group club! Congratulations to Holly Blakemore, Mitchell Ellis, Mackenzie Jury, Sophia Maltai-Spence, Lachlan Martin, Zack Pask, Alyssa Salmons, Addison Sands, Hunter Sands and Annabelle Smith. Highlights included:

  • All swims achieving Development, Advanced or Elite Times
  • Over 50% of all swims resulting in top 10 NZ finishes
  • Medal winners; Mackenzie Jury (3) and Mitchell Ellis (6)
  • Mitchell Ellis selected for NZ National Age Program racing at Queensland

This week, like much of Tauranga, we have had the chaos of AIMs 2024. LVW Aquatics had 24 swimmers who did a great job of representing their schools. Highlights included:

  • 42 Development times from: Hugo Baronian, Daisy Bell, Fletcher Cummings, Kaleb Dawson, Luke Faitl, Gabriella Farmilo, Emma Gao, Ali, Hiscox, Rylee Jury, Lockie Martin, Max Page and Will Smith
  • 16 Advanced times from: Fletcher Cummings, Rylee Jury and Lockie Martin
  • National Medal winners: Fletcher Cummings (2), Rylee Jury (1), Lockie Martin (7)

Timetable Changes

As mentioned in the previous memo we have to navigate the Greerton Closure and the school holidays over the next 5 weeks, so the squad training timetable will be a little jumbled from week to week. I’ve attached the Greerton Closure and the October School Holiday timetables so please make yourself familiar with these temporary changes.

  • Wk starting 16th Sep: Greerton Closure TT
  • Wk starting 23rd Sep: Greerton Closure TT
  • Wk starting 30th Sep: October School Holiday TT
  • Wk starting 7th Oct: October School Holiday TT
  • Wk starting 14th Oct: Greerton Closure TT
  • Wk starting 21st Oct and onwards: Term 4 TT (tbc)

The Greerton Closure begins NEXT WEEK, so remember that we will be using the Toi-Ohomai Aquatic and Fitness Centre in the afternoons. I’ve attached a copy of a map for those of you that aren’t familiar with the pool.

The T4 timetable

We’ve tried to avoid wholesale changes (the next five weeks alone will give us whiplash) but with junior squads over capacity there will be some minor changes to accommodate them. View >

Upcoming competitions

Through term four Swimming BOP will be hosting the Classic and Premier Series. The Classic series is targeted at swimmers who are early in their swimming career.  The Premier series targets swimmers who are on or about to enter the NZ Age group progression. The qualifying bar has been set at 12-year-old development times. If you have a 12-year-old development time in any event then the Premier Series is for you. If you are yet to achieve a 12-year-old development time then the Classic series is for you.

Fliers for all competitions are up on the noticeboard. Development times are posted on the far wall.

Athlete / Parent Forums

LVWA is investing in the knowledge and understanding of young athlete development.  As part of a series of workshops and speakers, LVWA is pleased to host Bernie Roodt in the first of two forums in nutrition and then a specific look at female athlete needs.  All forums will have 45 minutes of knowledge sharing followed by time for Q&A.

Bernie is a Registered Clinical Nutritionist and owner of Tauranga Wellness Clinic: https://www.taurangawellnessclinic.co.nz/

Forum 1:         Nutrition / Hydration – getting the right fuel

                        9th October     6.00pm

                        Greenpark Staffroom

When you board an aeroplane to fly in New Zealand, across the ditch or even on a long-haul flight – you are trusting the pilot has made all the correct sums to make sure they’ve taken on board enough fuel to fly you to your destination, and have some spare in case they must circle around the airport to land.

So, what do flying and swimming have in common? You’d be surprised -it has everything in common! You do not put diesel or energy drinks into an aeroplane motor – it just won’t do what you need it to do, let alone get to where you want to be.  Jet motors need jet fuel – similarly, the right food will fuel you for training, racing and where you want to get to.

Forum 2:         Female Health – specific requirements to support female swimmers.

                        8th November 6.00pm

                        Greenpark Staffroom

LVWA recognises that female-specific needs in swimming are unique.  As coaches, parents, and athletes, understanding female health is critical to being able to respond and provide support for young people to be active in ways that boost their wellbeing.

With this forum being specific to female needs, we would ask that Mum’s and/or female caregivers attend. Another forum will be provided for Dad’s and male caregivers to develop their supporting knowledge.

Squad Promotions

We have a large number of promotions through our junior squads this term. Congratulations to all those swimmers moving up for term 4.
